| Essential oils
are among the oldest and most powerful therapeutic agents
known to man. Although used for fragrance, they have a long
history of use in healing throughout the ancient world. Some
oils, particularly frankincense, are mentioned often in many
Judeo-Christian and Muslim religious texts. The oils were
used to cure multiple ailments and in ancient Egyptian
purification and embalming rituals. Clove, lemon, and many
others were invaluable for antiseptic use hundreds of years
before discovery of modern antiseptics.
These oils, also
known as aromatics, were prized treasures of the ancient
world and were traded for gold, silver, and even slaves. The October 1985 issue of The
National Geographic reported that nearly 1,000 years before
Christ, dynasties of the ancient world were fighting over
the lucrative incense market. Caravans of 3,000 camels
transported costly frankincense along the Frankincense
Trail, a 2,400-mile-long road that stretched from southern
Arabia to the coast of Israel.
The ancient Egyptians may
have been the first to recognize the therapeutic potential
of essential oils. The 870 foot long Ebers Papyrus, dating
back to 1500 B.C. and discovered in 1817, listed over 800
herbal prescriptions and remedies. Essential oils were produced
in Europe as early as the 12th century. As the bubonic
plague decimated Europe in the year 1413, four thieves were
captured and charged with robbing the dead and dying
victims. When the thieves were tried, the magistrate offered
leniency if they would reveal how they resisted contracting
the infection as they performed their gruesome acts. They
explained that they were perfumers and spice traders and
told of a special concoction of aromatic herbs, including
cloves, cinnamon, and rosemary, that they rubbed on their
hands, ears, and temples which resulted in their immunity.
BBC News recently
reported (03-20-07) that consultants at
Wythenshawe Hospital found that using a vaporizer to spray
essential oils into the atmosphere killed off
micro-organisms. Airborne
bacterial counts dropped by 90% and infections were reduced
in a nine-month trial at the burns unit. There
were no MRSA (Methicillin
Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus
infections in the
burns unit while the machine was being used with the recipe
of oils. In the final two months the natural essence blend
was removed from the machines and MRSA levels in the air
increased - and there was an MRSA outbreak in the ward.
